Is violence the answer?

Greetings and Salutations!

Is violence the answer? is a new pub about violent video games, television shows and movies. My thesis is that an excessive amount of intake of violence is unhealthy, unwarranted, and unecessary not to mention damaging to children especially.

Video games with a mature rating are very violent and little kids are allowed to play them. Also CSI shows that focus on gory violence and movies that do the same, are they playing a role in our overly violent society?

I tend to think so. I find it a shame and I personally like to watch old tv shows and movies with the exception of good quality.  Some of today’s movies and shows are okay. Take the latest Batman movie, Batman, The Dark Knight Rises.  Personally I couldn’t even watch it. The movie was just not enjoyable for me. I found the plot in Batman, with Michael Keaton, Kim Basinger, and Jack Nicholson much better.

I would advise watching what your young children see in movies just as a precaution. Young minds are not fully developed and excessive violence could confuse or corrupt them.

I hope we as a society can start understanding that violence does not need to be necessary for entertainment unless it’s within reason. For example, coyboys and guns are okay, but shooting and showing the gory details are unecessary in my own opinion.

The human spirit is born gentle, and is made to enjoy nature and beautiful things. So, even if one gets ‘used’ to the types of movies I just mentioned, that may not be a good thing.

Regards,

Rosie

How do you feel about old shows such as Gunsmoke?

Personally I am a peaceful person and I do not seek out shows with gratuitous violence, but if it is part of the story line, then I would not want it censored out. For instance, I like a lot of old movies that were made during World War II, and there is a lot of action about the war and such. Gunsmoke was also a very good show, and there was some violence in that as well. If violence is a natural part of the story, we cannot rewrite it to pretend like it did not happen.

Now if there is a people where people are being killed left and right for the gore factor, like The People Under the Stairs, I probably would just not watch that show. Of course people should not show younger children shows with lots of sex and violence, but I think some parents take censoring movies too far. I know I was allowed to watch R rated movies and read books with sex scenes when I was younger, and I turned out fine. I do not know, it just seems like kids used to have more freedom. But I also know the kids whose parents monitored everything they read and watched, they usually just would consume those materials when their parents were not around.

    Hi admin,

I’ve heard of Gunsmoke but not watched it, It sounds okay.

    Sweetbearies,

Yeah, I agree, if it’s part of the story line that’s fine, I just don’t like how they keep the camera on the gory parts excessively in shows like CSI.

I agree, there’s nothing wrong with true and real stories.

Objectively, in older movies, things were a lot different and more innocent. I happen to like old movies. I think today although the ratings are the same, the actual content seems “more violent” or more inappropriate.

I just saw “The Odd Life of Timothy Green” and there were some previews, one was “The Lorax” which looks great, one was a movie by Tim Burton called Frankenweenie which of course his movies are kinda weird.

I think the key thing here are the movies themselves, like Tim Burton movies are so “dark” and taste has changed greatly. I would recommend The Odd Life of Timothy Green because the moral to the story was good.

In retrospect, I think that it’s also a personal descision of what to watch on a general scale. Some people get nightmares from scary movies. I’d suggest that if they do to avoid them, and if they don’t okay.
