Duped by a Drupe

[This short piece was first published in the fall of 2013 on a site that has since closed.]

Fall is very nearly upon us. I can tell, because the dogwood tree is fruiting. The little red berry-like objects are really drupes. The outer, fleshy part surrounds a shell, and inside the shell is a seed. Come eat my flesh, the drupe seems to say, but then animals swallow the pit that protects the seed.

The dogwood is one of those trees that seems to be what it is not. For instance, in what seem to be its snowy flowers in the spring, the bracts show, but the flowers are so tiny we do not notice them at all. It’s tricky like that.

The dogwood is kind of like my posts, which seem to be about one thing, but are really about something else entirely. Can you tell what this one is about?
